Aragorn's father died when he was only two. He and his mother moved to Rivendell, under Elrond's protection. Elrond always treated Aragorn as his own son, and gave him the name Estel, the elfish for Hope, because he did not want to reveal his lineage yet. When Aragorn was twenty years old, Elrond told him his true identity : He is Aragorn, the heir of Isildur, and the lawful king of Gondor. Elrond showed him the fragment of Narsil, the sword of Isildur used to cut Sauron's finger and thus deprive him of the one ring of Power.

During that time, Aragorn met for the very first time Arwen Undomiel, beloved daughter of Elrond, and fell in love with her. But she was immortal elf, dearest to her people. Elrond asked him to forget about her, as she was unreachable for a human like him. Since then, Aragorn travelled everywhere on Middle Earth, fighting against the forces fo evil with the races he met. He became a wanderer, and assumed the name of Strider. He met Gandalf, bacame his friend, and learned from him prudence and patience. When he went to Lothlorien, he met Arwen again. He was a man now, not the young boy she met years earlier. They confessed their love to each other, and Arwen decided to become mortal to marry Aragorn. But Elrond would not permit it, he stated that Aragorn would not marry Arwen until Aragorn claimed his throne and become the king of Gondor.

He led the Fellowship after Gandalf's fall into Moria as far as Parth Galen. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas then turned towards Isengard in pursuit of the band of Orcs that had captured Merry and Pippin. After meeting up with Gandalf again, seeing the destruction of Isengard, and finding Merry and Pippin safe, Aragorn then made for the Paths of the Dead, he arrived in Gondor with a large army of men, and turned the tide of the battle of the Pellennor Fields. Soon after, he was Captain of the Army of the West, which rode forth to challenge Sauron.

After the War of the Ring, Aragorn was crowned king of the reunited kingdom with the name of Elessar Telcotal, and wed Arwen Everstar. During his reign, Gondor became beautiful and powerful, and extended its borders.

Aragorn died of old age, and Arwen survived him. The grief for the loss of Aragorn made her cold as ice. She left Gondor and went to Lothlorien, where she spent the last days of her life, alone. As the elves had left Middle Earth decades before. She died on the same hill where she and Aragorn had confesses their love to each other for the very first time.

Riddle of Strider
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king

A quote from "A Tolkien Treasury" by Alida Becker
Tall, straight,
leather-hard,
Blood of past
and future kings,
with a
broken sword...
